Anyone who owns or is considering buying a Kindle 2 has no doubt heard of the recent launch of the Kindle DX. If you are the former, this could be a great time to upgrade and if you are the latter, it could be a tough decision you have to make. When you are looking to spend the kind of money the Kindle costs, you don’t want to leap without looking. But if you do your research beforehand, you can be assured you will get the model that works best for you.

The older of the two models, the Kindle 2, offers a few less features and is a bit smaller, but also comes with a smaller price tag. The Kindle 2 is 8″ x 5.3″ x 0.36″ and has a 6″ diagonal screen. It weighs just over half a pound at 10.2 ounces and is great as a highly portable ebook reader. The Kindle 2 comes with 2 GB of memory, which can hold around 1,500 books, more than enough to fit most people’s libraries inside. At around $359 it is significantly cheaper than the new DX as well.

The new Kindle DX comes onto the market with a bigger is better attitude. The unit itself is 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″, but it boasts a huge 9.7″ screen with an auto-rotating feature. This means you can switch between landscape and portrait just by turning the device, making it great for newspapers or picture-heavy kid’s books. But this size means it weighs more as well. Nearly twice as much at a hefty 18.9 ounces.

The Kindle DX has twice the capacity to hold books, boasting of a 4GB hard drive. It can also natively read PDF files which is a huge convenience as the previous models required file conversion. All these features are available at the price of $489.

Don’t think that just because the Kindle DX is newer and sports bigger numbers that it is the only one you should consider. The Kindle 2 has size to its advantage. While the DX might be great for reading at home, the Kindle 2 is far more portable. It will also save you a big chunk of change. If you are willing to pay for the extra size and features, the DX is a great piece of technology. But the Kindle 2 still has more than enough to offer most people. If you are just looking for a way to replace ratty old books or cut down on how many textbooks you’re hauling around, the Kindle 2 has a lot to offer. Whichever one you decide is right for you, you’re getting a device that will keep you reading whatever you want whenever you want.

You won’t have a hard time finding a review of the Amazon Kindle DX if you search, but you will get some mixed results. The Kindle is the most popular ebook reader on the market and as such it has to appeal to a wide variety of people, something which is nearly impossible. While many complaints are due to personal experiences which are fairly uncommon, such as a 12 hour battery not lasting long enough for someone used to transatlantic flights, you will find some valid concerns. While many people may not feel these concerns will affect them, it is still important to address all of them. When you are buying a $500 piece of technology, you want to make sure you know exactly what you are getting.

List down the advantages of the DX and you’ll find yourself with a rather long list. The hype surrounding it during its release had some basis after all. First, the Kindle DX sports a huge screen with an auto-rotate feature, and natively supports PDF documents. All these make for a great device for reading newspapers, illustration-heavy books, tables, charts, and maps. Its 4GB of hard drive is large enough for your entire library and then some. The DX also has the sleek design of the Kindle 2 but with a much improved look and feel, and better placement of buttons.

But there are still issues, many of which aren’t exactly the fault of the device. The biggest complaint that many users have is the DRM (digital rights management) that Amazon has chosen to use. DRM is widely considered an outdated practice of material protection and unfortunately limits the kinds of documents you can use on your Kindle DX. You are forced to buy from Amazon and you may find that many of your reader files will not work.

And if you have a lot of reading material, you will struggle to search through it as the organizational limits of the DX are imposing. If you do manage to fill up that 3,500 book capacity, you may spend most of you time filtering through it looking for the book you want to read. And it is impossible to discuss the DX without mentioning the price. At nearly $500, many people just cannot afford to buy one.

All that taken into account, it’s time to take a step back and consider if the Kindle DX is worth having. True, it is one of the most expensive gadgets around given the fact that it’s more of a hobby gadget than necessity, but the features that also come with it as an ebook reading device certainly can’t be easily dismissed. It may have its share of flaws which are quite off-putting for some, but these flaws do not affect 100% of buyers. The bottom line is, the Kindle DX may not be for everyone just yet, but for most of those privileged to own one, their purchase was worth the price.

Are you striving to create a medical practice which is effectively paperless?

Does this type of project even seem viable for your office?

When deciding to make the move to an electronic office from a paper-based record-keeping system, one primary challenge you may face is deciding what to do with the paper forms which are currently being used at the practice. Some forms are a requirement of federal and state agencies – some others are just in practical use at the practice on a day-to-day basis.

We have so many forms in use at our practice, we don’t even really know the exact number of them. By compiling these paper forms in a binder, we are able to do an inventory and begin evaluations of which of these forms are really necessary for operations, which are infrequently used and may be discontinued, and which are gathering duplicate information and can be integrated elsewhere.

Our top goal in the change to EMR was to include as much documentation as possible in the EMR system. To do this, many of the forms had to be changed into templates which we can store in electronic format. You will have to choose the forms which should be incorporated into the EMR system, and deduce until identifying those forms which must be filled out on paper. Creating custom templates can be a costly and time-intensive project.

To create the templates, paper forms should be scanned into the EMR system, then saved and stored as images. There is a downside to this kind of scanning solution, however – that is, the information which is stored this way has limited uses. Data which is stored in this read-only format cannot be made easily accessible for data mining and research. However, some medical practices which are operate on EMR systems have already learned that a certain number of paper forms remain important elements in the overall operations at a practice, even if they are not stored but shredded at the end of each work day.

The use of e-Prescriptions is one great way to eliminate the amount of paperwork at your practice without switching over to a full EMR system. When using this method, prescriptions may be sent to the patient’s pharmacy electronically, without the necessity for the doctors to search around the office for a prescriptions writing pad and fill it out manually.

Also be sure to consider the communication styles between practitioners; many of these professionals will not be ready for an electronic medical records system in the near future. Some estimates state that approximately seven to ten percent of medical practices are using EMR at the office right now. Some of these systems are able to create a document from the clinical examination, then either: print them out and send by post; or, convert them to digital format and transmit to a referring doctor by fax. Keep in mind that the legal guidelines for transmitting medical data by email have become increasingly complicated; an entire other article would be necessary in order to properly discuss these considerations.

If you decide to scan all of your paper records into an electronic format, still you may not succeed at completely eliminating the use of paper forms at your practice. Some paper-based forms must be kept for legal and regulatory compliance. So, it may not quite be time to sell all your file cabinets quite yet. It could be a long time before we see the day when all medical documentation is generated and stored in electronic format.
